How Safe Is Your Resume Data? Why Our Privacy-First Approach Is Different
Contents
You create a resume on a free website. A couple of weeks later, emails start arriving about "career opportunities" and "coaching programs" you never signed up for. You wonder: how did they get my address? I only made a resume.
That's the core problem: many platforms don't clearly explain how they store your data or who they share it with. Build your free resume privately, because a resume is full of personal information that shouldn't end up in the wrong hands.
What Sensitive Information Is in a Resume?
- Full name, phone number and email address
- Your location
- Your work history, including current employer
- Your education
- Links to LinkedIn and other profiles
All of this is personal data. In the wrong hands it can lead to:
- Spam and phishing attempts
- Unwanted calls and offers
- Profiling and targeted advertising
- Your current employer learning you're job hunting
How Many Resume Platforms Work
Server-side storage
You write your resume and click "save". Your data goes to the company's servers and stays in their database. You can't easily verify who can access it or whether it's really deleted when you close your account.
"Free", paid for with your data
A free service has to cover its costs somehow. Showing ads isn't a problem in itself; the real question is whether your resume data is part of the deal. Some services use it for ad targeting, share it with partners or market you to recruiters as a "candidate".
Accounts everywhere
Many tools require an account before you can even start. Every account is one more place where your data lives.
The Cvbuildly Approach: Your Resume Stays With You
1. No server-side resume storage
Typical platform: your data → their server → their database.
Cvbuildly: your data → your browser's local storage on your device.
We don't keep a copy of your resume on our servers. There's no resume database to leak.
2. No account required
You can create and download a resume without signing up. No name, email or password needed to get started.
3. Optional backup to your own Google Drive
Want access on another device, or a backup in case you clear your browser data? You can sign in with Google and back up your resumes to your own Google Drive. We use the limited "drive.file" permission, which only lets the app access files it created itself, not the rest of your Drive.
4. Deletion you control
Delete a resume in the app or clear your browser data, and it's gone from your device. Since we never stored it, there's no copy waiting on our side.
5. AI only when you ask
When you use an AI feature, only the text you're working on is sent to our server and forwarded to our AI provider (Groq) to generate the suggestion. We don't store it. If you never click an AI button, nothing from your resume goes there.
6. PDF export without storage
To create a high-quality PDF, the preview is sent to our server, rendered into a PDF in memory and returned to you. Nothing is written to disk or kept.
7. Ads never touch your resume
Cvbuildly is free. Some costs may be covered by ads, but only on content pages such as blog articles. There are no ads in the resume builder, and your resume data is never used for advertising.
What Is Local Storage?
Local storage is a feature of every modern browser that lets a website save data on your own device. Only that website can read it.
Advantages:
- Your data stays on your device
- Fast and works without an account
- It stays until you delete it
Limitations:
- If you clear your browser data, it's gone, so download your PDF or use the Drive backup
- It doesn't sync between devices automatically (the optional Drive backup solves this)
- Anyone with access to your device and browser profile can see it, so use your own device
Can I Verify This?
Yes. Open your browser's developer tools, go to the Network tab and use the resume builder. You'll see that typing into your resume doesn't send it to our server. Requests only appear when you explicitly use an AI feature or export a PDF. Our privacy policy describes each case in detail.
Practical Privacy Tips for Job Seekers
When choosing a tool
- Ask where your data is stored and for how long
- Skim the privacy policy, even if it's long
- Be careful with "import from" features that request broad permissions
- Make sure the site uses HTTPS
When writing your resume
- Never include your Social Security number, passport number or bank details
- City and state are enough; skip your street address
- Leave out your date of birth and photo (standard for US resumes)
- Only link profiles you're happy for employers to see
Afterwards
- Close accounts on platforms you no longer use
- Use strong passwords and two-factor authentication where available
Our Philosophy
"The best data protection is not collecting the data in the first place."
Data we don't have can't be leaked, sold or misused. Our commitments:
- We don't store your resume on our servers.
- We don't sell your data.
- We don't use your resume content for advertising.
- We explain clearly when data leaves your device (AI features, PDF export, optional Drive backup).
- We announce changes to these practices in advance.
Your Data Belongs to You
Your resume is your professional identity. You should decide who sees it, when and how. Create your resume with Cvbuildly and keep that control.
