Build your resume from this exampleWho is this example for?
This software engineer resume example is for backend, frontend or full-stack engineers with two to six years of experience. The fictional candidate is a full-stack engineer working on an e-commerce platform. If you're a junior engineer, use the same structure with the projects section moved up.
What should a software engineer resume highlight?
In technical hiring, your resume is usually read first by a recruiter and then by an engineer. They look for different things: the recruiter checks whether the technologies in the posting appear on your resume; the engineer looks at what you built with them and which problems you solved. A good engineering resume answers both:
- A clear tech stack (languages, frameworks, databases, cloud and tooling)
- Bullets with measurable impact (performance, reliability, cost, developer productivity)
- Evidence they can check: GitHub, live projects, open-source contributions
Section-by-section tips
Header and links
Write your title close to the posting: "Backend Engineer (Node.js)" or "Full-Stack Engineer". Always include GitHub and LinkedIn links, and pin a few well-kept projects on your GitHub profile.
Summary
Two or three sentences covering your years of experience, your focus (backend, frontend, mobile), your main technologies and the kind of product you've worked on are enough. Instead of "passionate developer", say what you've built.
Experience
In each bullet, describe what you did, with which technology and the result. Instead of "Worked with React", write "Rebuilt the product listing page in React, reducing page load time." Tagging each position with the technologies you used there makes scanning faster.
Projects
Personal projects and open-source contributions are the strongest evidence, especially for junior engineers. Include each project's purpose, its technologies and a link. Leave out half-finished projects without a README.
Skills
Grouping skills improves readability: Languages, Frameworks, Databases, DevOps/Cloud, Tools. Remove technologies you haven't used in years; any of them may come up in an interview.
Education and certifications
If you came from a field other than computer science, or switched through a bootcamp, say so plainly; your projects can more than make up for a missing degree. Cloud certifications (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud) make a difference for relevant postings.
Example of grouped skills
| Group | Example |
|---|---|
| Languages | TypeScript, JavaScript, Python, SQL |
| Backend | Node.js, NestJS, Express, REST, GraphQL |
| Frontend | React, Next.js, Tailwind CSS |
| Databases | PostgreSQL, Redis, MongoDB |
| DevOps / Cloud | Docker, GitHub Actions, AWS |
| Testing | Jest, Playwright |
Summary examples
Junior: "Computer science graduate who has published three personal projects built with React and Node.js on GitHub. Looking to start as a frontend engineer on a team with code reviews and a testing culture."
Experienced: "Backend engineer with six years of experience in payment and order systems. Responsible for improving the performance of high-traffic services, observability and mentoring teammates."
Sample bullet points for a software engineer resume
- Optimized PostgreSQL queries and added a Redis cache in the order service, significantly reducing response times during peak sales events.
- Extracted the payment module from the monolith into a separate service so it could be deployed independently.
- Added integration tests to the CI pipeline, reducing the number of bugs reaching production.
- Improved Core Web Vitals on product pages rebuilt with Next.js.
- Reduced development environment setup to a single command with Docker and GitHub Actions.
- Onboarded two new engineers and handled their code reviews.
- Added Spanish localization support to an open-source validation library.
Common mistakes
- A long list of technologies with little context: instead of listing 30 technologies, show the ones you really used in your bullets.
- Skill bars and ratings: a bar next to "JavaScript" says nothing and can't be read by an ATS.
- Listing only tasks: instead of "Developed APIs", say what the API was for and its impact.
- Dead links: a broken demo or empty GitHub profile costs you credibility.
- Going over two pages: reduce old, unrelated positions to a single line.
Top skills for this position
| Skill | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Git and code review | The basis of working on a team; shows you know pull request culture. |
| Writing tests | Reduces production bugs; unit and integration testing experience signals seniority. |
| SQL and data modeling | Even frontend-heavy roles expect you to understand APIs and databases. |
| System design fundamentals | Mid-level and senior interviews cover scalability, caching and queues. |
| CI/CD and containers | Engineers who can ship code to production on their own contribute faster. |
| Clear technical writing | Design docs, pull request descriptions and issues are how distributed teams communicate. |
What if you don't have professional experience?
If you're looking for your first engineering job, projects should be the center of your resume. Move the projects section above experience and consider:
- An end-to-end project: a small but finished app with authentication, a database and a live deployment is worth more than dozens of half-done projects.
- Bootcamp or course projects: separate the team's work from your own contribution.
- Open-source contributions: even a small bug fix or documentation improvement shows you can collaborate.
- Freelance work: a website you built for a small business proves you've worked with a real client.
- Hackathons: show you can ship something with a team in a short time.
Get your GitHub profile resume-ready
- Pin your best three or four projects, each with a README explaining what it does and a screenshot.
- Make sure the setup steps actually work.
- Keep commit messages clear.
- Check that live demo links open before you apply.
What technical interviewers may ask about your resume
In technical interviews, engineers often pick a bullet from your resume and dig deeper. If you wrote "reduced response times", be ready to explain how you found the bottleneck, which measurements you used and which alternatives you considered. Only list projects and technologies you can discuss in detail.
How to write results you can't measure
Not every piece of work has a clean number. In that case, describe the impact qualitatively: "Moved the payment module into its own service so the team could deploy independently" contains no number, but the change is clear. Scope (how many services, how many users the system serves), ownership (solo or as a lead) and lasting results (a practice that became the team standard) are also strong signals.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a GitHub link on a software engineer resume?
It's not required, but it's a strong advantage. Code that can be reviewed is the best evidence, especially for junior candidates. If you include it, pin a few tidy projects with READMEs.
What should a junior engineer list instead of experience?
Personal projects, bootcamp or class projects, internships, hackathons and open-source contributions. For each, list the technologies used and the outcome.
Should I show skill levels with bars or ratings?
No. Bars, percentages or stars are vague and aren't read by applicant tracking systems. Group your skills as plain text and show how you used them in your bullets.
How long should a software engineer resume be?
One page for under five years of experience, and no more than two pages for more experienced engineers.
Should I have a separate resume for each type of role?
If you're applying for different roles, such as backend and frontend, keeping two versions makes sense. Cvbuildly lets you save several resumes and tailor each one to the posting.
