Build your resume from this exampleWho is this example for?
This recent graduate resume example is for candidates who just finished college, or are in their final semester, and are looking for their first full-time job. The fictional candidate has a business degree, two internships, a capstone project and student organization experience. Whether you studied engineering, social sciences or health, the same structure works.
What should a recent graduate resume highlight?
An employer evaluating a recent graduate is looking for answers to three questions: Does this person have the core skills? Are they ready to learn and take on responsibility? Are they genuinely interested in this field? Your resume should answer them with evidence:
- Internships: even short ones show what you did in a real workplace.
- Capstone and class projects: prove your knowledge of the field and your analytical skills.
- Student organizations and clubs: give examples of leadership, organization and communication.
- Technical skills and certifications: show the tools you can use from day one.
Recent graduate resume tips, section by section
Summary
In two or three sentences, cover your degree, your internship experience and the role you're targeting. Instead of "I want to develop myself", write what you'll bring to the employer: "Looking to build on the financial reporting experience from my internship in a corporate finance team."
Education
In the first year or two after graduation, education can stay near the top. Include your school, degree, major, graduation date, GPA if it's strong, your capstone project and any study abroad, minor or double major.
Internships and experience
Include every internship. Two or three bullets per internship are enough, but they should describe contributions, not observations. Instead of "Observed accounting processes", write "Helped prepare monthly vendor account reconciliations."
Projects and certifications
Add your capstone as a separate project and state the outcome. Online certifications in your field (Excel, Google Analytics, SQL, project management and similar) strengthen a recent graduate resume.
Skills
From the skills in the posting, choose the ones you really have. If you speak another language, list it with a clear level.
Recent graduate summary examples
Business graduate: "Recent business administration graduate with two internships in finance and marketing. Builds reports in Excel and Power BI. Looking to grow my analytical skills on a corporate finance team."
Engineering graduate: "Recent industrial engineering graduate. Analyzed bottlenecks on a production line for my capstone project. Looking to start my career in production planning or supply chain."
Social sciences graduate: "Recent psychology graduate with an HR internship where I supported first-round candidate screening. Looking for a role in recruiting and employee experience."
What these summaries have in common: the degree, evidence of experience and a clear goal. Two or three sentences is enough to cover all three.
Sample bullet points for a recent graduate resume

- Analyzed survey data from 120 small businesses for a capstone project and reported the main obstacles to digital adoption.
- Organized six industry networking events as vice president of the career club.
- Turned the marketing team's competitor price tracking into a shared spreadsheet the whole team used.

Top skills for a recent graduate resume
| Skill | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Advanced Excel | An everyday tool in many entry-level roles in finance, sales, operations and HR. |
| Data analysis and reporting | Easy to prove with a capstone or internship reports; shows analytical thinking. |

| Software for your field | SAP, Power BI, AutoCAD or SPSS; shows you can contribute from day one. |
| Learning speed | A recent graduate's biggest asset; illustrate it with a tool or process you picked up quickly. |
What if you didn't do an internship?
Not every graduate gets the chance to intern. In that case, put the weight of your resume on this evidence:
- Capstone project: describe the problem, method and result in two or three bullets and show it in a separate projects section.
- Class projects and case studies: work using real company data is especially valuable.
- Certificate programs: list online training you completed after graduation, with dates.
- Freelance work and volunteering: running a nonprofit's social media or building a website for a small business is real experience.
How to explain a gap after graduation
There may be a gap between graduation and your first job: a long job search, graduate school applications, caregiving or travel. Instead of hiding it, explain it in one line: "2025 – Job search; completed a data analysis certificate". Adding the training you did during that time turns the gap into a period of growth. Cvbuildly's career gap wizard helps you word it.
Common mistakes recent graduates make
- Sending the same resume to every posting: tailor the summary and skills to each job.
- Including high school: once you have a college degree, it's not needed.
- Vague statements: instead of "Participated in various projects", name the project and your contribution.
- Too much personal information: no photo, date of birth or full street address.
- Typos: on a recent graduate's resume, care and attention to detail are some of the strongest signals.
Applying to graduate programs and rotational programs
Large companies' new graduate and rotational programs often include online assessments, case studies and group interviews. In these programs, your resume is less a first filter and more a list of topics for the interviews. For every project and internship on your resume, prepare short answers to "what did I do, how did I do it and what did I learn?"

Frequently asked questions
Should education or experience come first on a recent graduate resume?
If your experience is mostly internships, keeping education at the top makes sense. Once you have full-time work experience, move experience up.
Should I include short or unpaid internships?
Yes. Any internship is real workplace experience. Its length doesn't matter much; describe what you did and what you contributed in concrete bullets.
Should I list military service on my resume?
Yes. If you served, list it like a job, with your role, dates and what you accomplished, using plain language a civilian employer will understand.
What if my GPA is low?
You don't have to list it. Highlight your capstone project, internships, certifications and student organization experience instead.
How long should a recent graduate resume be?
One page is enough. When choosing what to include, prioritize the internships, projects and skills most relevant to the position.
