Build your resume from this exampleWho is this example for?
This server resume example is for candidates applying as a server, busser, head server or banquet server at restaurants, cafes, hotels, resorts and catering companies. The fictional candidate has four years of combined experience at city restaurants and a seasonal resort. You can use the same structure for other hospitality roles such as barista, host or cashier.
What should a server resume highlight?
Hospitality hiring moves fast, and managers want answers to a few key questions: Can this person work quickly and stay organized during a rush? Do they communicate well with guests? Are they reliable and a good team player? Your resume should answer them:
- The type of venue you worked in (fine dining, casual dining, cafe, hotel, banquets) and its size
- Service knowledge: table service, buffet, banquet service, wine and beverage service
- POS systems and cash handling responsibility
- Food handler card and responsible alcohol service training, where required
- A second language, especially in tourist areas
Server resume tips, section by section
Summary
Keep it short: years of experience, the types of venues you've worked in and your strongest qualities. If you're looking for seasonal work, include your availability: "Available May through October."
Experience
For each venue, include its size (tables or covers), the section you were responsible for and your standout contributions. Include seasonal jobs too; returning to the same resort for several seasons shows reliability.
Skills
List service styles, POS systems, menu knowledge, wine pairing and handling guest complaints. In tourist areas, language skills are some of the most sought-after.
Certifications
Food handler cards, responsible alcohol service certifications and barista or wine training go on their own lines. Requirements vary by state and city, so list what you hold and when it expires.
Summary examples
No experience: "Hospitality student who has helped with service at campus cafes and events; food handler card holder. Available for evening and weekend shifts."
Experienced server: "Server with four years of experience in casual dining and at a seasonal resort. Stays organized during busy services and serves guests in English and conversational Spanish."
Head server candidate: "Seven years in fine dining. Responsible for the service team's shift planning, training new staff and resolving guest complaints."
Sample bullet points for a server resume

Top skills for this position
| Skill | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Speed and organization | Getting orders out correctly and on time during a rush drives guest satisfaction. |
| Guest communication | A friendly, professional manner is the biggest reason guests come back. |
| Menu and product knowledge | Answering allergen questions and making good recommendations builds trust. |
| Upselling | Suggesting dessert, drinks or the daily special at the right moment adds to revenue. |
| POS and check handling | Accurate order entry and cash-out are signs of reliability. |
| Food safety | Following food safety rules is a legal requirement and protects the venue's reputation. |
What if you don't have experience?
Serving is one of the jobs most open to candidates without experience; managers often look at attitude and reliability. Highlight:
- Any customer-facing work: retail, cashier, event staff, a campus cafe
- Hospitality or culinary training
- A food handler card
- Languages you speak
- Your availability: weekends, evenings, the whole season
Team sports or volunteer events also show you can work in an organized way as part of a team; keep them brief.
What to emphasize by venue
| Venue | What to highlight |
|---|---|
| Fine dining | Service etiquette, wine knowledge, describing the menu, attention to detail |
| Cafe / bistro | Speed, versatility, register and barista support |
| Hotel / resort | Buffet and banquet experience, languages, availability for the full season |
| Catering / events | High-volume service, team coordination, flexible hours |
Common mistakes on server resumes
- Leaving out seasonal jobs: every season is experience, however short.
- Vague language skills: say "conversational Spanish" instead of "some Spanish".
- A long, decorated resume: in hospitality, a one-page, easy-to-read resume is enough.
- Forgetting availability: state your shift, weekend or seasonal availability.
Applying for seasonal jobs
Resorts in tourist areas often start hiring seasonal staff a few months before the season begins. On seasonal applications, state your available dates, whether you need staff housing and your language skills near the top. Naming the type of property you worked at before (resort, boutique hotel, city hotel) and the restaurant or bar you worked in helps employers place you in the right outlet.
Interview questions about your server resume
- How many tables did you handle at once, and how did you prioritize during a rush?
- How did you handle a guest when there was a mistake with their order?
- What do you do when a guest asks about allergens?
- Which POS systems have you used?
Some restaurants also ask for a trial shift; be ready to show the skills on your resume during that shift.
Adapting this example for barista, host or busser roles
You can use this example for other hospitality positions too. For barista roles, highlight brewing methods and machine care; for host roles, reservations and greeting guests; for busser roles, table setup and team support. Updating the skills section for the position is usually enough.

Frequently asked questions
What should I put on a server resume with no experience?
Any job that involved customers (retail, cashier, event staff). Add a food handler card, languages and anything that shows organization and communication, and state your availability.
Should seasonal resort jobs go on my resume?
Yes. List each season with the venue, position and dates. If you returned to the same employer for several seasons, say so; it shows reliability.
Do languages matter on a server resume?
They can matter a lot in tourist areas and hotels. Describe your level honestly; even conversational skills in a guest's language are an advantage.
How long should a server resume be?
One page is enough. Hospitality employers prefer short, easy-to-read resumes.
